We hope all of our ASACC Membership and friends has a wonderful Holiday Break and a Happy New Year! For most colleges school started this week (for a few of you lucky campuses it starts next week). Good luck in the new semester.
Registration is now in full swing for the 2016 National Student Advocacy Conference taking place in Washington, D.C. March 12-15. The conference gives student leaders from community colleges across the nation a chance to meet, discuss and select the 2016 Legislative Agenda for ASACC. Because of the 2016 election, we expect a large turnout this year and encourage colleges to register now to secure their spots as well and the hotel rooms that will certainly sell out. You can get more information on registration and hotel reservations by visiting our website at:
The priority discussions for the 2016-17 Legislative Agenda will center around five topics including:
- Pell Grant
- Reauthorization of the Higher Education Act
- Using Pre-Tax Dollars for Student Loan Payments
- America’s College Promise
- The Dream Act
ASACC will be putting on information on these issues over the next few weeks and we encourage student delegations to become familiar with the basic information provided. At the conference the students will vote to narrow the slate of issues to the top three. Those three will be included in the Issue Sheet that is delivered to Congressional Offices on Monday and Tuesday of the conference.
We are also excited to have former presidential candidate and America’s leading consumer advocate Ralph Nader, speak at the conference. Other speakers will be announced in the next few weeks.
If you have questions or need assistance in registering for the conference, please call (801) 785-9784. We look forward to seeing you in March!
